OUR STORY
CoHousing Budapest is an association dedicated to community housing. The members of our initiative are diverse, whether in terms of profession, interest or marital status.
What unites us is our knowledge and practice of cohousing as a form of housing.
Several members of the team have been working on the topic since 2012, within the framework of the informal organisation Living in Community or other voluntary activities. In order to implement cohousing in Hungary, the team founded the CoHousing Budapest Association in autumn 2019 with 15 founding members.
WHAT IS COHOUSING?
It is a form of housing where residents develop their housing conditions and living environment through community collaboration, based on common goals and interests. Residents voluntarily and consciously enter into a community with each other and share spaces, facilities, tasks and activities to the extent they determine.
OUR VISION
The CoHousing Budapest team envisions a Hungary where self-organising communities play a role in creating housing.
These self-organising communities are groups that develop their housing conditions and living environment through the power of community collaboration, based on common goals and interests.
SELF-ORGANIZING COMMUNITIES AGAINST THE HOUSING CRISIS?
Self-organizing communities offer flexible and creative solutions to the challenges posed by the housing crisis. Whether it’s supporting apartment buildings, co-living communities, or cohousing groups, community collaboration consistently creates more sustainable and affordable housing models. That’s why the majority of our projects focus on these community-based initiatives.

We want people to see the neighbourhood as a cooperative community.
The mission of the experts at the CoHousing Budapest Association is to introduce and implement the cohousing model in Hungary. We work to ensure that cohousing becomes a viable housing option in the country. We believe it is essential that the methodologies used in cohousing projects become integrated into Hungary’s existing housing system.
HOW DO WE INTRODUCE COHOUSING METHODOLOGIES?
To achieve our mission, we offer services that help introduce cohousing methodologies. These services are beneficial for communities, businesses, organizations, real estate developers, and municipalities alike. Our goal is to adapt best practices from abroad and support the planning and management of cohousing projects. In addition, we advocate for the establishment of legal and financial frameworks to facilitate the realization of more self-organizing community housing projects and cohousing developments in Hungary.
